Topographic information is getting more and more accessible due to the availability of many satellite sensors acquiring data in stereo mode (IKONOS, ASTER, ALOS, SPOT, etc.) and also because of the free SRTM topographic layer offering an exceptional rich and accurate data.

At the first level, a Digital Elevation Model provides an altitude value for each pixel; this value corresponds to the average altitude within that pixel. The smaller the pixel the more accurate the absolute altitude value is for that pixel.

Based on that information we can generate contours using that first degree information. But there’s a lot more to that. When analysing this dataset at the second and at third degree we can extract Slope value, Slope direction, Channels, Ridges, Passes, Peaks, planes and pits. The DEM can also be illuminated using azimuth and Elevation values giving a visually powerful effect. The illumination can also be used to enhanced certain geological structures or finding shadows within an satellite image acquired at a certain moment during the day.
